The future house for a retired couple was the brief for this beachside house. The site is relatively steep, which allows direct entry from the street level to all main living spaces with guest accommodation on a lower level. From the street, the building appears low in scale, whilst still gaining good elevation on the beach front. Cantilevering upper floor elements combined with a bridge form breezeway threshold let the house float above the dunal vegetation giving the building a sense of lightness about it. The main cantilever is 6 metres This is successfully achieved with 2 very long steel beams below floor that run the length of the building terminating at the furthest extent of the cantilever. All of the rooms are cross ventilated. Automated windows allow easy control. Water runoff is harvested and natural day lighting is used to minimise the amount of artificial light required. Multiple decks with flexible large scale openings are employed to capture or control the prevailing coastal breezes. The internal bridge offers a calm alternative to gusty winds outside.
