Biographie
Peter Harvey design’s posses something unique that has developed over the past twenty years, as a result of the different skills and influences attained from varied professions and specialist training.
He started out primarily as an Engineer, coming from a creative family background of ribbon makers, milliners, tailors and musicians. As a young boy Peter was first drawn to Draftsmanship when he acquired a book on building ships. He would frequently visit a friends boat yard where he was in awe of the craftsmanship, skills and exotic materials that he witnessed, this would lead him to the field of engineering when he left school. Another factor that was to have a profound influence on him at an early age, was the surrealist works of Dali. Discovering ‘Christ of Saint John of the Cross’ by Salvador Dali from a replica his father had created in wood marquery, struck a creative chord in his mind, that would lead him in a direction that would harmoniously realise his technical expertise.
In 1980 he left the Engineering industry to design window displays. A decade on, and in the position of Visual Merchandising manager of Harrods, he curated The 20th Century Chair Exhibition comprising of designers such as Ron Arad and artists such as Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi and Alan Jones. The exhibition was a huge success containing the largest collection of designer/artist chairs to date in London becoming a landmark in British Design curation, but also confirming for Peter what he himself should be designing.
In 1991 he established his own design company having created his first furniture collection. He has gone on to produce legendary collection such as Tongue-in-Cheek, Smile and the Diva Range. The early realisations of the connections between surrealism, amorphous forms and design are ever prevalent in his work. He works with historical reference where he seeks a revival in the spirit of late 60′s and 70′s Pop and the enthusiasm of spirit that came with such movements. He is inspired by the joy and fun that can be found in life, design and art and sees how the body can become an agent for the senses to be ignited. Creating a better life though design and using the objects we surround ourselves with to lift our mood, are reoccurring themes in all his works.
Peter Harvey is now known as one of Great Britain’s most innovative designers. He has gained an international reputation with sculptural furniture and lighting creations of the greatest technical precision. He has featured in many international Art Fairs such as Art Basel, Miami and the Milan Furniture show, also participating in International exhibitions such as SaloneSatellite in Milan and the Design + Emotion at the Badisches Landesmuseum Karlsruhe Germany. Smile Chair was recently invited to become part of the Cosmit Eventi Permanent Design Collection.
Peter Harvey Ltd moved to Berlin in 2007 to announce a new phase in creative direction following on from the critically acclaimed design work from Peter Harvey London. The opening of the new showroom on Gormann strasse, in the artistic hub of Mitte, is the perfect setting to introduce new spectrum of work in ‘DesignArt’ that Peter Harvey had been moving towards over the last two decades.
