SENSE is a futuristic interactive device that allows the user to have a sensorial experience of websites, movies, and games via smell, taste, and touch.

Imagine if you could smell, touch, and taste something that you are viewing on your computer screen. Surfing websites, Internet shopping, and gaming would take on whole new dimensions of experience. SENSEimagines a future where this is possible.

SENSEis a wireless interactive product with a touch-sensitive screen. It creates a tactile experience of the physical, thermal, and haptic properties of the items on one’s computer screen. It also contains a smell magnification and taste system. SENSEcontains micro-printer with scent- and flavour-based ink. It offers thirteen different wax cartridges that print and melt simulated flavours in order to create an interactive experience of what is on screen.

Five cartridges contain the fundamental flavours – sour, bitter, sweet, spicy, and salty. An additional « enhancement » cartridge allows one to perceive the meat flavours, fatty flavours, and the « umami » flavour (which was discovered by the scientist Kikunae Aqueda at the beginning of the last century, and which is attributed the taste characteristics of Asian foods such as seaweed soup and soy sauce).

The flavour cartridges are combined with seven wax cartridges that contain the basic smells that exist in nature. classified as floral, mint, ethereal, camphor, musk, spicy, or putrid, These allow the creation of any possible combination. SENSE prints small translucent tasting sheets that dissolve in the roof of the mouth. These small degustation sheets are combined with the smells that the micro-emitters expel as the wax from the cartridges melts and the scents combine.

SENSE has a touch-screen display that provides for easy and agile manipulation of information, as well as the creation of the tactile experiences of the selected products on the website, or in the movie or game. The user inserts their hand into the SENSE sheath and feels different impressions such as temperature, roughness, softness, hardness, or pressure. Nanotechnology makes this possible. The many nerve receptors in the hand translate the different types of stimulations into information that can be interpreted by the brain. SENSE also can be used to read Braille text, and can be programmed with voice.

New SENSEapplications can be downloaded from Internet. It is envisaged that a sensorial experience will encourage a more emotive connection between the user and the product being viewed via digital media.

The Clavilux 2000 is an interactive instrument for generative music visualization, which is able to generate a live visualization of any music played on a digital piano. The setting of the installation consists of three parts: A digital piano with 88 keys and midi output, a computer running a vvvv patch and a vertical projection above the keyboard.

For every note played on the keyboard a new visual element appears in form of a stripe, which follows in its dimensions, position and speed the way the particular key was stroke. Colours give the viewer and listener an impression of the harmonic relations: Each key has it’s own color scheme and « wrong » notes stand out in contrasting colors.

All stripes stay and overlap each other in an additive way, so at the end a kind of pattern remains – a summary of the music – which will be always unique since the notes of the composition aswell as the interpretation of the piano player are influencing the outcome. Furthermore the piano player can switch between the standart 2d view and an additional 3d view of the visualization while playing.

Digital guitar VS Electric guitar – The difference ?
I am obsessed with digital guitar. But I also love electric guitar, and I have learned what it’s good at and what it’s capable of. Some of its most important qualities and characteristics stem from the very fact that the electric guitar is made out of wood and strings. A guitar string is « beautiful » – because the sound generated comes from the very vibration of the string, interfering with a magnetic flux and inducing an electric voltage, which is then amplified. Why would you want to emulate that? It is perfection. It is pure nature. It is in the analog domain. I did not intend the Misa digital guitar to replicate a traditional guitar.

The reason for the Misa Digital Guitar
Guitars by their very nature have limitations. To create sound you need to hit a string, so that the sound at its most intense point is always the beginning of the pluck. The left hand controls what notes to play, and the right hand controls when to play these notes and the intensity of the notes. Effects can be inserted into the signal chain, but they are usually foot pedals which makes the experience of controlling effects disjointed from what your hands are doing. Plus, you can only really make use of one pedal at a time. Even in the (rare) case that controls are mounted on the guitar, the hand needs to switch between strings and controls. This may be okay if you only use effects occasionally, but when every note you play needs the controls set differently – good luck with that. Electronic music cannot be played effectively with such constraints. In electronic music, the timbre (or colour) of the sound can be morphed in an infinite number of ways. For a guitar to accommodate this, the right hand needs more control than just plucking strings. You need to be able to control elements of the sound, such as sustain, pitch, filter cutoffs, contour or any other synthesizer parameter, in a way that has no physical constraints. This was my thought process when designing the Misa digital guitar. There are no strings on this instrument. The right hand doesn’t pluck strings, it controls sound. So don’t compare Misa digital guitars to acoustic guitars or electric guitars. Those are different instruments, for different artforms, for different music. This is electronic music.

The Misa Digital Guitar
My design aim was for a minimalistic interface, with configurability at the sound module end, leaving the instrument itself simple and effective. That being said, the Misa digital guitar software is open source, and powered by the Linux operating system. This means programmers have the flexibility to modify how it works, and even change the interface to provide specific functionality. This is important because collaboration from the users themselves, experimenting and innovating in their own ways, will further improve the instrument. The Misa digital guitar is a MIDI controller. It must be plugged into a MIDI capable sound module. The sound of this instrument is limited only by what you connect to it.
